"Interoperability in Pathology Communications" - Dec. 8, 2004 - Melbourne

Dear Colleagues,

At the last HL7 Australia Conference in July 2004 the topic of messaging products and services that create the infrastructure that allows messaging interoperability between healthcare providers (GPs, Specialists, Laboratories, etc.) was discussed in detail. Faced with the need to provide a ubiquitous, whole-of-health infrastructure, the overall consensus of the discussions was that the current  "inlands of connectivity" need to be "bridged" by gateways.

An open invitation is extended to those involved in the health communication and pathology systems sector to progress interoperability at a Technical Workshop convened by HL7 Australia, the General Practice Computing Group (GPCG), the Health Informatics Society of Australia (HISA) and the Pathology Messaging Working Group of Standards Australia (IT-014-6-5).

The focus of the meeting will be on the development of gateways between communications providers, the lower layer communications including transport and security (OSI Levels 1-6) and on what can be done to increase the uptake of existing HL7 Standards and associated terminology.

Charles Parisot (International Director Health Care Standards, GE Health Systems), a leader in the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) activity will give the Workshop the benefit of his experience. Charles will also be giving keynote addresses at the National Health Information Summit (on Tuesday December 6th, 2004) and at the 6th HL7 Australia Conference on Friday, December 10, 2004.

This Workshop will provide an opportunity for technical experts from interested organisations to review the use of standards in pathology communication and discuss the requirements for achieving interoperability and the possible development of extensions to the existing Handbook (HB262) by an integration profile and conformance testing. International experience has shown the effectiveness of the integration profile particularly when taken up as part of a purchasing process (e.g. evaluation, RFT requirements, etc.).

We look forward to working with you to progress the cause of messaging interoperability in Australia.
