9th HL7 Australia Conference & Annual General Meeting

November 8 & 9, 2005

Central Queensland University Campus, 7/333 Kent Street, Sydney, Australia

Dear Colleagues,

You are invited to the 9th HL7 Australia Conference on November 8 & 9 in Sydney.

Day One: HL7 and OpenEHR
Following on from discussion at the Jul7 2005 HL7 Conference in Melbourne and in collaboration with the OpenEHR Foundation this workshop will have a further look at OpenEHR and HL7 issues

OpenEHR is a structure for the representation of information in the Electronic Health Record and is being considered as a standard approach by the National E-health Transition Authority and is a component of the European standard on EHR. At the same time much work is underway via HL7 (mainly in the USA) looking at the functional requirements and structures of the EHR using the HL7 version 3 models and approaches.

The use of Archetypes from the OpenEHR model to describe mid level information components is gaining acceptance and several trials in Australia have used this approach. On the other hand HL7 version 3 is based on a multi level model structure which includes “clinical statements”, CMETs (common and re-useable message elements), and document templates and the Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) for clinical documents.

There has been much discussion about the relative roles of EHR and messaging architectures and the use of terminology with both. This workshop will commence with an introduction to OpenEHR, and HL7 components and explore the tasks that each is attempting to address. The key outcome of this meeting will be a better understanding of OpenEHR and HL7 Version 3 approaches, and an exploration of where they are complementary and also where they might overlap.

Who should attend?

  • Clinical information systems architects and implementers
  • Anyone who has heard about "OpenEHR" and wants to know more
  • Anyone who has heard about HL7 "Version 3" and wants to know more
  • Health Informatics students

Day Two: HL7 Implementers Workshop

This day is intended to the unsung heroes of health informatics – those who actually design and build the systems and cut the code.  This session will involve many of the HL7 V2.x "gurus" (including Clem McDonald)  and provide a practical opportunity to see how others are doing it, tricks of the trade, controversies, pitfalls and traps for the young players (and older ones). It will be a place to bring your problems and issues with V2.  This session is not primarily designed for the policy makers and managers (who are of course welcome) but for those who have to do the work! So get your boss to help you make it happen!

Please see the program below for more details and register soon! Note that HL7 Australia members in good standing enjoy a reduced registration fee of $300 - and only $550 if attending both days!!

We look forward to welcoming you to share knowledge and experiences in Sydney.
