Invitation from HL7 Australia

Welcome to Sydney!
The Australian e-Health community is delighted to host the HL7 International Working Group Meeting 9-14 January 2011!
The HL7 International Standards and Education Meeting will provide the forum for more than 50 Work Groups, Committees and Task Forces to progress the HL7 V2.x, CDA, V3 and EHR Standards.  An extensive range of Courses, Tutorials and Workshops will allow us to hear and learn the very latest developments in EHRs, clinical messaging, terminology, etc. from the global experts and leaders in e-health.
To host the Meeting in Sydney, HL7 Australia has partnered with the Dept of Health and Ageing, NEHTA, Standards Australia, HL7 New Zealand and Business Events Sydney.
Australia is delighted to welcome the e-health standards world to Sydney in January and is looking forward to an exciting and productive meeting.  We are dedicated to making the Sydney WGM a success - both by attendance and regarding the financial outcome for HL7 International.

The HL7 Meetings are open to anyone interested in e-Health, Health Informatics and Healthcare IT Standards.  The education program of the Meeting includes free introductory sessions as well as tutorials at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.  The Standards development will be undertaken in ~65 different committees that meet throughout the week.

HL7 Offers Free Ambassador Webinar: Meaningful Use Stage 2 and HL7 Standards
Thursday, 26th April 2012
Health Level Seven® International (HL7®), the global authority for interoperability and standards in healthcare information technology with members in 55 countries, will present a complimentary Ambassador webinar titled Meaningful Use Stage 2 and HL7 Standards on Thursday, May 3 from 3:00 – 4:00 pm EDT.

Health Level Seven International Project Supports the U.S.  Office of Personnel Management's Blue Button® Requirements
Tuesday, 28th February 2012
Health Level Seven® (HL7®) International, the global authority on standards for interoperability of health information technology with members in 55 countries, today announced a response to the U.S.  Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) recent requirement that U.S.  Federal Employees Health Benefit Program (FEHBP) health insurance carriers support the U.S.  Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Blue Button® text file format as a means of conveying personal health information to federal employees.  In January 2012, HL7 launched a project that defines the conversion of an HL7 Continuity of Care Document (CCD®) to the Blue Button format via an XSLT style sheet tool.  Because most Meaningful Use–certified health information exchange systems already possess CCD-export capabilities, the tool will be able to leverage those capabilities as a simple and effective way for many carriers to meet OPM's new requirement.

HL7 Pilot Program to Provide Key Intellectual Property Free of Charge
Wednesday, 22nd February 2012
Health Level Seven® International (HL7®) announced today a pilot program to provide some of its key intellectual property free of charge.  HL7 is keeping its promise to lower the barriers to adoption of electronic health records by making portions of our valuable intellectual property freely available to our stakeholders, said Charles Jaffe, MD, PhD, CEO of HL7.  We believe that care givers, academic centers and vendors will greatly benefit from this significant enhancement for access to valuable HL7 material.

Do you need a visa?

Most Sydney WGM participants will only need an "Electronic Travel Authority" (ETA) which you can obtain online in about 5 minutes - like the US, Australia now requires for travel security reasons that visitors register their intent to travel online.  All you need is your passport details and a credit card (unfortunately) for the A$20 fee:

If you have a USA, Canadian, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysian, Singapore, South Korean passport:
https://www.eta.immi.gov.au/ETA/ETAInput.jsp?language=En  ("Visitor ETA" - A$20 service fee)

If you have an European Passport (incl. Norway & Switzerland):

If you have a passport from another county, you need to apply for a visa as soon as possible:

Sydney January 2011 WGM - on a Budget?

Even if your Sydney 2011 travel budget has been severely limited for reasons beyond your control - you can still come to Sydney!  Here are a few little-known sources for low-cost flights and accommodation:

Budget Flights:
Meeting participants coming from Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand can take advantage of the excellent fares by Australian budget airline JetStar (a subsidiary of QANTAS).

Meeting participants coming from the US might consider taking a cheap flight (or air miles) to Honolulu, Hawaii, and then take Australian budget airline JetStar to Sydney, which costs ~ US$1,000 return.

Budget Accommodation:
There are many splendid hotels on Sydney Harbour!  However, there is also very affordable accommodation from A$46 per night within a few minutes walk to the Meeting venue Cliftons.  All prices include taxes:

- Sydney Harbour Youth Hostel (shared room): A$46
- Australian Heritage Hotel, The Rocks: US$69
- Glenferrie Lodge B&B (10 min ferry): US$83
- Napoleon On Kent (Suites): US$119
