Introduction
Well, here is the 2nd "A08 - HL7 Update"... I didn't get any flames for the first one - so here's more!
My goal is to provide a contribution to improving the flow of HL7 information in our region. Our colleagues in the US meet and talk so much more often. I have again compiled some of the items that are hopefully relevant to us into a mini email-newsletter.
Please help me by letting me know what you find useful and what other info would help you.

Australia
The Health Information Management Association of Australia will be holding their 20th national conference in Adelaide at the Hilton from the 27th to 29th of October 1999. For more info check their web site: www.himaa.org.au
The main event this month is the "National Health IT Infrastructure" workshop organised by Andersen Consulting on behalf of the DoH. Stakeholders will meet for two days to discuss what can be done to focus Australia's strategy in Health IT. The outcomes will determine much of the medium-term policy in health IT standards and infrastructure.
HL7 in Australia
After plenty of hard work the revised versions of AS4700.1 and AS4700.2 are well under way. AS4700.2 is nearly ready for public comment, while AS4700.1 needs some more input from the Working Group, especially regarding the Victorian RAPID spec.
After a long break IT14/6/6 "Referral and Healthcare Messaging" met in June to reconvene under David Rowed as chair. The Working Group made good progress and was able to address a number of specific technical issues. Watch this space.
HL7 International
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has approved HL7's Clinical Context Management Specifications (CCOW) V1.0 and Arden Syntax V2.0 specifications as American national standards. Copies of these newly-approved documents are available for download for HL7 members only at www.hl7.org/library/standards.cfm.
The next release of the HL7 Reference Information Model (RIM) has been posted at Duke at: www.mcis.duke.edu/standards/HL7/data-model/HL7/modelpage.html.
The Secure Transactions Special Interest Group announces the formation of a ballot group for the following proposed recommendations:
1) HL7 Security Service Framework
This recommendation will consist of three papers:
a) HL7 Security Services Framework Part 1: Basics of HL7 Security
b) HL7 Security Services Framework Part 2: Fundamentals of HL7 Security
c) Glossary of Acronyms, Abbreviations and Terms Related to Information Security in HIS
2) Standard Guide for Implementing HL7 EDI Communication Security
This recommendation will consist of two papers:
a) Standard Guide for EDI (HL7) Communication Security
b) Standard Guide for Implementing EDI (HL7) Communication Security
