HL7 Australia Mission
HL7 Australia is an open, not-for-profit, democratic organisation that supports the HL7 user community by:
Co-ordinating and championing the development and implementation of the Australian and global family of HL7 standardsDeveloping skills and knowledge exchange amongst members and the wider informatics communityPromoting HL7 as the most effective standard for systems interoperability, EDI message interfaces and information management in healthcare

 

Statement of Collaboration

HL7 Australia and the openEHR Foundation recognise the importance of developing Electronic Health Record systems in Australia.  Both parties agree that both organisations provide crucial input and facilities in this area and that close collaboration is required to achieve this goal.

Principles of Collaboration

•  HL7 Australia is the local Affiliate member of HL7.org and comprises the most prominent group of HL7 experts in Australia

•  The openEHR Foundation is an international not-for-profit foundation, working towards making the interoperable, life-long electronic health record a reality and improving health care in the information society.

•  The HL7 messaging standards have been endorsed by the National Health Information Group (NHIG) as the standard messaging protocol for Australia.

•  The openEHR Foundation has created and released specifications for electronic health records.

•  HL7 Australia and the openEHR Foundation agree to both maintain open lines of communication.

•  We agree to collaborate in a spirit of mutual appreciation, respect and openness.

•  We have established a strategic relationship for the purpose of promoting EHR interoperability in Australia.

 

HL7 Australia and the openEHR Foundation agree to work together to achieve the following goals in Australia:

•  Creation of specifications and tools that support the safe and appropriate communication and sharing of personal electronic health records with maximum interoperability.

•  Maximum alignment of concept representation through use of openEHR archetypes and consistent use of terminology.

•  Adoption of a common service model including:

 

HL7 Australia and the openEHR Foundation will together:

•  Seek national support for a process to agree and maintain openEHR archetypes for use in Australia with appropriate governance.

•  Support the development of a national archetype repository with controlled authoring and publication and, where necessary, develop Australian localisations for international archetypes.

•  Specify the mapping of HL7 messages as used in Australia to openEHR structures and archetypes and jointly support the development of tools to automate this transformation; and

•  Provide education which is aligned with these agreed goals and projects at HL7 Australia meetings.
