HL7 Australia members are actively involved in standards development both locally and as part of the global effort through HL7 International.

    HL7 Australia has been involved in developing local health informatics standards since its inception. Two specific projects are underway currently. They are an Australian FHIR implementers group looking at representations of local concepts and the HL7 Australia Standards Development Initiative.

    Until a recent change in policy from Standards Australia, HL7 Australia had an agreement and worked closely with them to produce Australian Implementation Standards.  The results of that co-operation are still available free at the site originally sponsored by the Commonwealth http://www.e-health.standards.org.au/

    HL7 and its members provide a framework (and related standards) for the exchange, integration, sharing, and retrieval of electronic health information. These standards define how information is packaged and communicated from one party to another, setting the language, structure and data types required for seamless integration between systems. HL7 standards support clinical practice and the management, delivery, and evaluation of health services, and are recognized as the most commonly used in the world.
